There was something fishy going on this past weekend in the lake in front of the Bellagio and its unique occurrence made waves in the high-tech entertainment arena. Spectacular performances pairing the ancient Japanese art form of Kabuki with larger-than-life animations and stunning water choreography debuted Friday, Saturday and Sunday on Lake Bellagio. Famed Kabuki actor Ichikawa Somegoro starred in an extraordinary rendition of the Kabuki masterpiece Koi Tsukami or “Fight with a Carp” as the Fountains of Bellagio were transformed into an epic battle scene via projection mapping by Japanese masterminds teamLab. Somegoro clashed with the giant carp from an impressive 165-foot stage constructed inside Lake Bellagio during the 30-minute production, which ran August 14-16.

Shochiku, Japan's premier Kabuki producer and global ambassador - with artistic partners Panasonic, teamLab and WET - and support from MGM Resorts International, aimed to raise worldwide awareness for the art by orchestrating this elaborate, high-tech performance unlike anything Las Vegas and traditional Kabuki had ever seen. TeamLab’s projection mapping together with spectacular water effects by WET brought the historic Japanese narrative to life in a Vegas-style production that also showed MGM Resorts’ dedication to different world cultures.

On August 8, to commemorate the 35th anniversary of Xanadu, Olivia Newton-John and her daughter, Chloe Lattanzi, unveiled a music video collaboration for their new dance single “You Have to Believe.” The track draws inspiration from Newton-John’s #1 hit “Magic” with new verses written by Chloe while Olivia sings the familiar chorus, “You have to believe we are magic…” August 8 is the actual day on which the musical fantasy was released in movie theaters in 1980. This is the first video collaboration between mother and daughter. Ironically, it was on the set of Xanadu that Olivia met her first husband and Chloe’s father, Matt Lattanzi, who was a dancer in several musical numbers in the film. The debut of the music video was held at Share Nightclub in Las Vegas, which is where it was filmed. The club was transformed into a modern-day Xanadu for the occasion.

Speaking of Australia, from where Newton-John hails, Australian-based erotic male strip show, Aussie Hunks, will be opening this coming week downtown at the D. Aussie Hunks represents the next generation of male revue. Comprised of Australia’s top eight classically-trained dancers in hip-hop, break and street dance, the hunks will tantalize American audiences for the first time. As seen on Australia’s Got Talent and So You Think You Can Dance Australia, the group takes male revue to a whole new level. Patrons can enjoy 75-minutes of pop, lock and droppin’ fun as the men explode with seduction and world-class choreography set to chart-topping music of all genres.

I went to see Jimmy Darren’s show over the weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it, just as I enjoyed Tony Orlando’s show the weekend before. By the way, here’s an interesting tidbit of information. When Tony was an A&R guy in the record business, he received the song “Tie a Yellow Ribbon” from the composers of the tune. He offered it to both Jimmy and Bobby Vinton but they both turned it down. And the rest, as they say, is history, with the song becoming Orlando’s signature hit.

It was in mid-June that the musical world and Las Vegas lost the very talented composer/singer/producer Larry Hart, who died very suddenly at age 57. Besides having been a Grammy Award-winner, he was also the creator of a stage show called “Sisterella,” the only show that Michael Jackson was ever one of the producers of. He is sorely missed by his friends, one of those being international superstar Engelbert Humperdinck, whom Larry composed music for and with. Larry even lived in Engelbert’s home in England for a spell while they wrote together. Shortly after Larry’s death, I was on Facebook and found this beautiful tribute to Larry written by Engelbert, who writes incredible poetry and quotes:

Gone with a whim...with an urge not desire,

Suddenly destroyed like the ashes of fire

A heart full of love with a soul so endearing

Closed all too soon, a shock unbelieving...

To unravel the motive for the whole world to see

Like an undying love of a mother to be

What's in a mind that can take what was grand

In a moment of despair with the touch of a hand

Gone with a whim for God to have and to hold

Of a memory with love that will never grow old.

MGM Grand will host comedian and Emmy Award-winning actor Brad Garrett’s annual Maximum Hope Foundation Charity Poker Tournament Saturday, Sept. 19 on the casino floor between Wolfgang Puck and the KÀ Theatre. The tournament, which will begin at noon, will offer participants the opportunity to play alongside Garrett, other celebrities as well as professional poker players. All proceeds from the event will go to the Maximum Hope Foundation.

“This is my sixth year hosting the poker tournament to benefit Maximum Hope, a small grassroots foundation I started 15 years ago,” stated Garrett. “Eighty-five cents from every dollar we raise goes to helping families who are facing their darkest days as they care for a child with a life-limiting illness. Even the smallest donation can help one of our many families with the daily necessities that so many of us take for granted.”

With a thrilling array of spectacular illusions featuring majestic cats, Westgate Resorts has announced a new show with master magician Dirk Arthur. We’re all very sorry to hear that Suzanne Somers will not be returning to the Westgate. She had a terrific Vegas-style show that was just what this town has been missing. The audience agreed – the night that I went to see her, people were walking out of the cabaret explaining, “We need more shows like this in Vegas.”

Speaking of America’s Got Talent, there are some interesting happenings going on with Season 2 winner Terry Fator, the amazingly talented ventriloquist/impressionist happily ensconced at The Mirage in his own showroom. Fator proposed to his girlfriend, Angie Fiore, on stage – on bended knee and singing “This Guy’s in Love With You” – and then put a diamond ring on her finger when she said yes. According to published reports, Fator’s second wife, Taylor Makakoa, who remains his on-stage assistant and president of his company, was backstage at the time. Fator and Makakoa, whom he married in 2010, allegedly 24 hours after he divorced his wife of 18 years, Melinda, separated in February of this year. No word on whether their divorce is final. However, I received word of his impending engagement from a close friend of mine who works in a high-end jewelry store in Dallas. She told me over a month ago that Fator and Fiore, both who hail from Dallas (he moved her to Las Vegas earlier this year), were in the store looking at engagement rings.
