Tommy DeVito, founder and one of the members of one of the most popular and successful singing groups of all time, Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, celebrated his 86th birthday at a party on the 52nd floor of the Palms in tandem with the release of the movie Jersey Boys at the hotel's Brenden Theaters. Attending the party was DeVito's good friend, actor Joe Pesci, who as a young man and a close friend of DeVito's in New Jersey had introduced Bob Gaudio to the group -- Gaudio was the talented songwriter/singer that ended up penning the group's megahits.
Also at the party, along with an assortment of VIPs, were entertainers Clint Holmes and Frankie Scinta, who hosted the short ceremony and the bringing out of the cake, as well as Joey Scinta and Vinnie Falcone, who was Frank Sinatra's conductor for a decade. DeVito, who had a long history of trouble with the mob and the law as a teenager and was in jail seven or eight times, discovered a 15-year-old Frankie Valli singing on a street corner in New Jersey and made him the lead of what was originally The Four Lovers. They changed their name to The Four Seasons after seeing a flashing neon sign on a bowling alley that carried that name. The group, of course, later became Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. The cake cutting began on a high note -- DeVito sang the string of flalsetto notes that precede "Walk Like a Man" for the crowd. DeVito also "sang" a little for Bobbie Katz in her live interview with him before the party.
