A new show has opened on the Las Vegas Strip that offers you a chance to grin and “bear” it, for real! East met West on Saturday, January 11, as PANDA! celebrated its world premiere at The Venetian and The Palazzo Las Vegas. The first-ever Chinese production to take up a residency on the famed Las Vegas Strip, PANDA!hosted a red carpet event in honor of its opening, featuring world-renowned celebrities, athletes, and beauty queens.
Among the guests in attendance were Holly Madison, Carrot Top, Olympic Gold Medalist Boxer Zou Shiming, Shanna Moakler, Josh Strickland, hypnotist Marc Savard, Claire Sinclair, Ricardo Laguna, Jeff Civillico, Murray and Chloe SawChuck, Thunder From Down Under’s Chris Asimos, America’s Got Talentmagicians Jarret & Raja, speaker, actress, and former gymnast Cathy Rigby, Steinway artist Danny Wright, and cast members from Rock of Ages and Million Dollar Quartet.

The Broadway-style comedy PAWN SHOP LIVE!, a parody of the story behind the History channel’s reality smash hit “Pawn Stars,” opened in the Gordie Brown Showroom inside the Golden Nugget in downtown Las Vegas on Tuesday, Jan. 21. Created by Emmy® award-winning producer Derek Stonebarger, the production is based on the story of the world's most famous and beloved pawn shop, Gold & Silver Pawn. PAWN SHOP LIVE! includes story contributions from Rick Harrison and the Harrison family. The break-out stars of the TV show have fully endorsed the production, which tuns Tuesday through Saturday at 4 p.m.
With seven live actors and dancers, as well as a puppet, PAWN SHOP LIVE! features celebrity guests and surprises - even the real “Pawn Stars” will appear on stage as often as their filming schedule permits. The on-stage characters will be lampooned versions of Rick Harrison, Austin “Chumlee” Russell, Corey "Big Hoss" Harrison and Richard “The Old Man” Harrison - better known as Slick, Chump, Lil Boss and Old Fart. Directed and co-written by Troy Heard, the show begins with a young Slick Garrison struggling with a debilitating illness which forces him out of school and into a world of home schooling. Slick grows into a book- and street-smart genius, using his experiences and life lessons often taught by his father - a puppet named Old Fart - to eventually influence the world with his knowledge and art of the deal. Working the family business, Slick is joined by his son, Lil Boss, and his son's dimwitted friend, Chump, who become international superstars in the process.
Starting February 11, folks will be able to take a bus tour that’s right out of the movie Casino.Led by famed mob hit man Frank Culatta, who long ago owned the Upper Crust pizzeria in town, the tour leaves from the Royal Hotel, As scenes from the movie play on a monitor on the bus, Culatta exposes the truth behind the happenings being viewed on the screen (one of the characters in the film was patterned after him and there is even a scene in which a real 1973 murder he committed is depicted) as visitors are taken through the Las Vegas environs and shown where the mob used to live and hang out. Peppered with Culatta’s colorful stories of the larger-than-life real mobsters, places, and events and culminating in a pizza party, it’s a great evening of Las Vegas history you won’t find anywhere else. Culatta, who told me that he committed four murders, two direct and two indirect, spent 10 years in jail altogether for burglary (he used to rob the locals) and was also in the Witness Protection Program.

Irish artist Graham Knuttel and students from the Las Vegas Academy of the Arts had heir first creative brainstorming session for a mural to be placed on the Neonopolis building in downtown Las Vegas. The worldwide acclaimed Irish artist and leading figurative painter met with his new collaborators, 13 handpicked promising art students from the Las Vegas Academy of the Arts, to outline plans for two huge art panel murals for the east facing wall on the Las Vegas Boulevard-side of Neonopolis. The highly visible murals will be 9’ x 27’ and mounted close to the top of the building. Knuttel pointed out that Las Vegans will see the work all the time and tourists once or twice so it should be relevant to Las Vegas and encompass connectivity with the environment. Together Knuttel and the students settled on a “mobsters” theme as a starting point.
“The Ultimate Showman,” Earl Turner, returns to the Suncoast Showroom with “Oh What A Night!” on February 15 and 16. Turner’s son, Aaron, competed on the hit television show So You Think You Can Dance and was named runner-up during its tenth season. Aaron Turner will make a special guest appearance at his father’s shows on February 15 and 16.

Bonkerz Comedy Club has joined forces with House of Blues Foundation Room to present a Comedy Night that kicked off on Thursday, Jan. 23 with a special performance by funny lady Kathleen Dunbar. The event took place in Foundation Room’s Shangri-La Room on the 63rd floor atop Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. The Venetian and The Palazzo kick-off the Year of the Horse with a ceremonial dragon dance complete with firecrackers and eye painting ceremony. The colorful event will feature a parade of dancers and drummers dressed in authentic costumes as they make their way throughout the properties. The kick-off Dragon Dance takes place on Friday Jan. 31 at 3pm. The ceremonial dragon dance will begin with an eye painting ceremony at The Venetian porte cochere, making its way through the casino to The Waterfall Atrium & Gardens of The Palazzo, and continues through The Palazzo.

Galaxy Green Valley Luxury+ Theatrewill host the 2014 Inaugural Half Season of Cinema Society of Las Vegas making its Las Vegas debut. Las Vegans will soon be able to experience prestige motion pictures by top major and independent studios on a monthly basis from the comfort of a Luxury+ theater. Each showing will feature a pre-show cinema chat with Cinema Society of Las Vegas Director, Andrew Friedenberg, and key members from the film (directors, producers, cast, cameramen, etc.based on availability), along with an open forum for informative discussion following the screening. There is currently one showing a month through April, beginning on January 27th.
Following a successful run of shows in 2013, comedian Bill Maher will return to The Pearl inside Palms Casino Resort for additional performances in 2014. Show dates are March 22-23 and October 10 –11, 2014 at 8 p.m.
The Smith Center for the Performing Arts has added an additional week of performances for the world premiere of a reimagined version of “THE TEMPEST,” which will now play April 6–20. due to popular ticket demand. The Smith Center’s first ever co-production, “THE TEMPEST” is produced by the American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.), adapted and directed by Aaron Posner and Teller from the play by William Shakespeare, with magic by Teller, music by Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan and movement by Matt Kent of Pilobolus. “THE TEMPEST”performances will take place at The Smith Center’s Donald W. Reynolds Symphony Park in a 500-seat climate-controlled tent, where no seat is more than 60 feet from the stage.
In order to start ushering the most iconic and longest-running show on the Las Vegas Strip into the contemporary age, the final performance of the original version of Jubilee! at Bally’s Las Vegas will be held on Thursday, Jan. 30. The show will reopen in March 2014 after undergoing a major transformation under the direction of Frank Gatson Jr., one of the world’s most celebrated creative directors and choreographers.
